The officer looks for several signs of impairment. Initially, when they’re driving behind you, they’re looking to see if you’re showing sign of your driving ability, are you crossing, veering to different lanes, and if they found enough probable cause to pull you over, then they will talk to you, and they can see if you have bloodshot, watery eyes, if you have slurred speech. Even after slurred speech, they can ask you to get out of your vehicle, and if you stumbled out of your vehicle, that could be another sign, and you have to preform a field sobriety exercise, and there are several factors there. Are you able to follow proper directions? If you are not able to follow directions, if you’re not able to perform well in the sobriety exercise, then all of those are signs of impairment that they can use against you in a DUI trial.
